Singapore Prize and Temasek’s Partnership With the Earthshot Prize
SGPC – A Singapore pool player has won the grand prize of $13 million in this week’s Powerball draw, making it the fourth largest top prize since 2014. The winner, who has yet to be identified, purchased a $7 Quick Pick ticket from Rangoon Provision Shop located at 681 Race Course Road. The winner was among the first group of ticket holders to have their winning numbers confirmed, and will be notified of the amount on Monday.
The heir to the British throne is visiting Singapore next month to promote his Earthshot Prize, which awards a total of $10 million to five winners who are developing solutions to climate change. Prince William will meet entrepreneurs, policymakers and investors with the finalists and winners during a four-day trip. He will also call on Singapore officials and visit The Istana palace — one of the city-state’s oldest heritage sites.
Temasek, a government-backed fund that invests in companies promoting sustainable development, has expanded its long-term partnership with the Earthshot Prize. It will now be the sole sponsor of the global competition, with an additional $2 million earmarked to boost support for the finalists in the build-up to the award ceremony in November.
A new translation category has been added to the biennial Singapore Literature Prize, which is open to authors of all nationalities for works that deal with Singapore history. This year’s shortlist features 49 titles across three genres and 12 categories, although the number of submissions was smaller than last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
This is the second year that a translation prize has been offered. Last year, it was awarded to Tan Xiang Yeow for his work The Assassination of the Generalissimo. The reopening of the prize reflects the increased interest in the topic, as well as the need to highlight work in the four languages of Singapore.
The runner-ups in the fiction, nonfiction and poetry categories will receive $20,000 each, while those in the shortlist for the young adult and children’s literature prizes will get $10,000 each. The shortlisted works will be publicly announced on June 25 at Victoria Theatre, and the winners will be presented with their awards on August 25. More information can be found on the program’s website.
