This year’s Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize judges, Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh, have chosen a winning story, ‘Who Rattles the Night?’ by Annie Zhang. Overland will publish the story in our Summer 2023 edition, and we’ll also publish two runners-up. The judges have reviewed over 500 entries and we would like to thank them for their commitment to the integrity of the blind-judging process.
Each year the Sydney Peace Foundation honours a nominee who has worked to promote peace with justice, human rights and non-violence. The winner of this year’s Sydney peace prize is the black Lives Matter movement, which was founded by Patrisse Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi after the killing of Trayvon Martin in the US. The movement is now active around the world.
The Maxwell E. Arthur Literary Prize is a literary award that is given each year by the Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts to a student of Australian Literature at the University of Sydney. It was established in 1997 and is named after Maxwell Arthur, a former President of the Sydney Mechanics’ School. The prize is worth $21 000.
The MAK Halliday Postgraduate Research Prize is awarded annually to the student who has achieved the highest marks in junior units of Jewish Civilisation, Thought & Culture. The prize is supported by the Mandelbaum House Trust and the Department of Hebrew, Jewish & Holocaust Studies. The winner receives a cash prize of $5,000.
