Hong Kong Pools
When you think of Hong Kong, the first thing that comes to mind is probably shopping or dim sum, not great swimming. But Hong Kong is home to plenty of beautiful, modern pools that offer a refreshing escape from the city’s hot summer days.
While public beaches and pools have reopened in some areas, most are still closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. A shortage of lifeguards is also making it difficult for the government to reopen most of the city’s pool and beach facilities. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has warned that a full reopening of the pool network is “unlikely” this year.
The new Tung Chung Swimming Pool, designed by the Farrells architecture firm, was built on a waterfront site that demarcates the entrance to Kennedy Town. The building’s unique seashell-like design was inspired by the local environment and features a zinc façade that references nearby wet markets, old light industries, shipping businesses, and other metal structures that are commonly used along the waterfront. The indoor pool is surrounded by windows and has a natural light source, while the outdoor swimming pool overlooks Ngong Ping cable cars and offers stunning views of the bay area.
In addition to the spectacular architecture, the Tung Chung Swimming Pool is a beautiful place for swimming and relaxation. The pool’s transparent glass bottom allows guests to see the underwater world of fish and other marine life, while a large deck offers loungers for sunbathing. The pool is equipped with a diving pool and two kid-friendly pools.
A visit to the Tung Chung Swimming Pool is surprisingly affordable, as you can purchase a public pool monthly ticket for just $150. However, since the pool is so popular, you should arrive early to secure a spot.
If you’re looking for a more luxurious swim, head over to Cordis Hotel in Mongkok. The hotel’s 42nd floor swimming pool is a tranquil retreat high above Mongkok’s busy streets. Get there early to get a few uninterrupted laps in and nab a seat poolside. And don’t forget to order a drink from the poolside Asaya restaurant to cool off!
The pool at the Ritz Carlton is truly a sight to behold. Located on the 118th floor of the International Commerce Center – aka the top floor of the tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong – this sleek, modern indoor pool is the closest you’ll get to swimming in the clouds! The pool boasts floor to ceiling windows, mirrored ceilings, and LED walls that showcase an illusion of coral reefs.
